So with the release of the new Volvo S90, they said that it would be available with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. But what happens if you switch phones? Or if you buy a car used? Can you switch the operating systems? And am I stuck with one so I have to choose my OS as well as my car?

As of now. Google have confirmed their system will work with all phones, Apple on the other hand won’t come out and say if non iPhones will work with CarPlay. So yeah avoid CarPlay.

Of course because why would Apple share?

It’s an app in the car. My Golf R does the same thing. I can and have switched between CarPlay and Android Auto, or choose to not use it and just use the cars regular interface.

That’s not true. Android Auto does not work with iOS.

So you can switch between both?

Yes. I had an iPhone and switched to Android and use Android Auto now. I can also not use either and just use the Bluetooth from the car.

Most brands have both Carplay and Android Auto supported. I know VW, Chevy, Hyundai, and Ford support both.

At the moment, Google plan to have it working with everything because they're Google and they want your DATA. Apple haven’t said what their stance is yet. I’ll be honest they are both a bit bare when it comes to compatibility with the own OS so I reckon these systems need a bit more time before being released.

I have both systems in my car. I can’t use Android Auto with my iPhone. Android Auto is Android only.

I actually don’t mind this with this new information.

It’s an added bonus. Honestly most of the time I just use the Bluetooth and not touch either app.

Some cars support only CarPlay or Android Auto, but the majority of them support both CarPlay and Android Auto. Any car that supports both, when you hook up either an iOS or Android device, you will get the corresponding in-car interface. But it’s not like if you first hook up an iPhone to it, the car becomes locked into CarPlay and can never use Android Auto.

I’d probably just use the bluetooth as well.

I think you are confused as to how Android Auto and Carplay work. It’s through your mobile device not the infotainment system. The infotainment system simply has to be compatible to allow your phone/tablet to mirror onto it.

It’s device dependent not car dependent, the car needs the device to show the interface. No device no interface. Leave your android at home? You’ll have to use the normal cars built in infotainment menu.

I was confused as to how these worked. Thank you. Everything makes sense now.

I now understand how this works.

Well they haven’t been very clear as to how any of it works. I don’t know why they and most other car manufacturers are keeping it so close to the vest. I just read up on the system about a month ago since a lot of 2016-2017 cars are expected to have it. Cool concept but I hope my favorite app Waze gets supported because as of right now neither AA or CP allow it.

For what its worth, I just bought an aftermarket unit for my Subaru - a Pioneer unit which has both Apple Carplay AND Android Auto side by side (we wanted that since my wife has an Apple phone and I’m on Android)...most other units seemed to be pre-loaded with one or the other.

Clarity for sure is something they should have.
